Two Hands Working On Artwork

Wallpaper maker Deborah Bowness and painter Oliver Crowther invite you to a flag making workshop.

Flags will be considered as visual language that draw on a variety of influences and applications: from heraldry to semaphore; state identity to public installation and street celebration.

To mark Leek Textile Week, the legacy that the textile industry left on the townscape through the building of mills will be taken into consideration, along with its affect on the community.

A variety of processes including fabric collage, block printing and painting will be explored.

This is a free workshop and is suitable for both children and adults.

Where: The Nicholson Institute, Leek, Staffs, ST13 6DW.

Time: 11:00 am – 12.00 pm / 12.00 pm – 1:00 pm

Running from 23-29 September 2024, Leek Textile Week will comprise a series of community-focused activities, talks and exhibitions that celebrate the town’s rich textile heritage. We will weave threads of the past into the present, spinning new connections with artisans from India and beyond whose knowledge helped transform the local industry.

Leek Textile Week is funded through Arts Council England’s National Lottery Project Grants, the Creative People & Places programme and the Historic England’s Everyday Heritage Grants: Celebrating Working Class Histories.
