_________

Gawain returns to court, forever changed, carrying the truth of his wild encounters and the complex nature of the Green Knight.

When you return from this trail, what insights about yourself and the freedom found in the wilderness will you carry back into your ‘everyday’ world? How can you embody this in your daily life, subtly challenging norms and championing a more authentic sense of who you are?

_________

Artist statement: Lud’s Church – considered an important and awe-inspiring place in both the Gawain’s poem and the local landscape of The Staffordshire Moorlands, this piece of artwork has literally been physically reenvisioned; a metal ‘fantasy figure’, sanded, primed and re- painted in the colours of the progress flag – a truly transformed ‘Gawain’!

____________

You have reached the final stage of your journey: the dramatic, hidden chasm of Luds Church, the ancient site believed to be the mythical Green Chapel from the legend of Sir Gawain.

The power of this location lies in its remote, wild terrain, which transforms isolation into protection. Where Gawain found his moment of truth, a modern voice found peace: as one man (approx. 40) shared, “It’s just so remote up there, when I held a lad’s hand up there I wasn’t scared.”

“I was really connected [with myself] in 2004 – I had been living with HIV for 20 years and I wanted to celebrate – it was the year that the Lord of the Rings DVDs became available and I thought “New Zealand, yes! That’s the place to go”…That was a coming together [of all the parts of my story].”
